Warninks Advocaat

This is a drink we have loved for decades, it reminds me a little of American eggnog with a kick. Haymans London Dry Gin
You can always trust there will be a bottle of gin in anyone’s cupboard, with the humble gin and tonic always being a safe go to. In this case, we tried out Hayman’s London Dry Gin.
This was my first time trying Hayman’s, and it didn’t disappoint. When you crack open the bottle you’re first hit with the pleasant scent of juniper, with citrus and coriander lurking behind. The taste is creamier than most gins I’ve tried, although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing; due to its more citrus-y taste I actually think it does the gin some favours. In terms of tasting, like with the aroma, the juniper is the first flavour to come through, followed by the lemon citrus (made better if you drink with a segment of lemon), before fading into a finish of juniper, orange zest, pumpkin spice and perhaps a small lingering taste of liquorice adding a hint of faint bitterness.
I would recommend, if you’re adding this to your assortment of Christmas drinks, to pair this gin with Mediterranean Tonic and serve with light puddings, although you could drink it at any time, the taste is best accompanied with gelato, saving the wine for the roast.
Available from – Hayman’s London Dry Gin for £27.00
Aber Falls Single Malt Whisky
Next up is a classic staple, perhaps not drank as often as the hearty Gin and Tonic, and most classically served on the rocks: Whisky.
With a Welsh heritage, I’ll review the Aber Falls Single Malt Whisky first.
Matured in bourbon and oak casts, this whiskey is brimming with subtle spice and a nice amount of rich fruit.
On the nose, you’re greeted with a nutty creamy malt scent, with elements of fruit (mainly dates and prunes) lurking behind. At first sip there’s a gorgeous taste of vanilla and toffee, followed by dried fruit – mainly sultanas, and almost a taste of espresso and dark chocolate, making me think this could make a good addition for an Irish Coffee (or in this case, Welsh Coffee!)
Finally, you’re left behind with a delicious aftertaste of vanilla fudge and sherried fruit cake.
I’m not a keen whisky drinker, finding the taste a little too strong for my linking, but found this whiskey to be perfect, as it was more subdued that most Whiskey’s I’ve tried, but still had the staple taste expected from a classic Single Malt. Alongside this, you have to give the team at Aber Falls extra points for their commitment to sustainability and quality; working closely with the local farmers.
I would personally pair this with a good Christmas pudding, or perhaps an after dinner Irish Coffee.
Available from – Aber Falls Distillery for £27.00
Gulliver’s 47
Next up on the Whiskey’s is Gulliver’s 47, matured in Pedro Ximénez casts. A classic english whiskey, Gulliver’s definitely a household name if you’re a keen whiskey drinker.
Whereas the Aber Falls was slightly more subdued, with a focus on vanilla and fruity tase, Gulliver’s is far ‘darker’ in a sense with its taste. On the nose I would say it is far more treacle-y, with the raisins hitting you first, rather than the dates and prunes. The taste kicks off with the dark fruit cake coming through, and some woody spices. Rather than tasting like dark chocolate, like the Aber Falls, Gulliver’s comes through with a more bitter taste, like cocoa nibs. Finishing the palate off, some sweetness comes through with some liquorice lurking in the back of your throat.
I would say this whiskey has a more in your face, strong taste to it than the Aber Falls, and would be perfect as the booze to set alight your Christmas pudding to, as well as being paired best on the rocks. It’s your staple, go to whiskey for avid drinkers and you can’t go wrong with it.
Available at – Gulliver’s 47 for £79.00
