LONDON EATERIES – THE OYSTERMEN SEAFOOD BAR & KITCHEN TO LAUNCH IN COVENT GARDEN THIS JULY
Seafood specialists The Oystermen will officially open their first permanent mooring, The Oystermen Seafood Bar and Kitchen, on Monday 3rd July at Henrietta Street in Covent Garden.
The cosy 26 cover restaurant and oyster bar will feature an open kitchen presided over by hot-property chef Alex Povall, lately of Angela Hartnett’s acclaimed Café Murano and Merchant’s Tavern, and born and bred in shellfish-haven Weymouth on the Jurassic coast.
Diners will be able to enjoy a cut-above collection of oysters from all around the UK – from Cornwall to Scotland, via Dorset, Kent, Essex and North Wales – accompanied by much-loved favourites from previous Oystermen pop-ups, such as crab doughnuts with house-pickled cucumber, and creamy mackerel and horseradish pate. The Seafood Bar & Kitchen’s menu will also include brand new treats like crispy cayenne mussels with a zesty lime mayonnaise, a rich south coast curried clam chowder, and Scottish mussels with Herefordshire cider and bacon.
The finest fresh fish and seafood will be delivered and cooked up daily – not just oysters, but crabs, clams, cockles, razor clams, mussels, and a seasonal selection of fish.
A set lunch and pre-theatre menu will be available seven days per week, and the oyster bar will remain open for post-theatre platters, light bites and drinks. The Oystermen’s infamous “Bubbles ‘n’ Oysters Happy Hour” £10 deal will be in full effect from 3–5pm every day, offering six freshly-shucked oysters and a glass of Crémant de Bourgogne ‘Domaine la Croix Montjoie’, a delicious French sparkling that rivals Champagne.
Visitors to the new bricks and mortar venue will also be able to sample the exclusive craft beer collaboration between The Oystermen & popular South London brewers Canopy Beer Co. Now bottled and ready for drinking, the ‘Everyday Oyster Stout’ is a smooth dark beer, promising a hint of brine balanced with sweet dark chocolate.
As with their extended residency at The Sampler in South Kensington and previous special events, The Oystermen Seafood Bar & Kitchen will be intimate, lively and fun. Alongside co-founders Matt Lovell and Rob Hampton, restaurant manager Andrea Bertone has brought together a front-of-house team that reflects The Oystermen’s vision of hospitality: a relaxed, affordable, fun dining experience, with second-to-none service.
The Oystermen co-founder Rob Hampton commented:
“We are delighted that Alex Povall is joining our team for The Oystermen Seafood Bar & Kitchen. Alex brings with him a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and excitement to the kitchen, and we can’t wait to serve his stunning new dishes to our guests this summer”.
Head Chef Alex Povall added:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with Matt and Rob, two people with whom I share the same passion for fantastic seafood and great service. Bringing the freshest ingredients to such a great location as Covent Garden will allow us to showcase the very best fish and seafood the UK has to offer.”
Co-founder Matt Lovell commented:
“Since its inception, The Oystermen has always been committed to finding a permanent home from which to bring our friendly and fresh seafood concept to the wider London audience. We are incredibly excited to be making that home Covent Garden, the heart of the West End and an increasingly vibrant foodie location.”
