LONDON EATERIES – A taste of Sicily in Spitalfields

BOTTOMLESS brunches have taken London by storm. The concept was born Stateside and the phenomenon quickly travelled across the pond as Brits lapped up the idea of enjoying delicious fare with unlimited alcoholic refills and still be in bed by a reasonable hour.

I’ve been to a variety in the capital from raucous to refined, but none are so sophisticated as the delightful Canto Corvino, nestled on Artillery Lane between London’s Liverpool Street and Spitalfields Market.

I had stumbled upon this charming Italian restaurant and bar a year ago and made it my secret breakfast spot – lapping up its plentiful supply of juices and coffees. But when I heard that a new brunch menu was on offer I couldn’t wait to try it.

The relaxed atmosphere quickly transports you to the Mediterranean with fairy lights, rustic flourishes and a charming, airy ambiance.

Friendly, knowledgeable staffed heaped our table, dressed in crisp linen sheets, with baskets of steaming freshly baked Rosemary focaccia, which I was quick to drench in an array organic olive oil shipped in from the Sicilian olive groves.

While the menu is considered and varied, my party and I were unable to resist the excellent value Bottomless Brunch menu, which offers two courses and free-flowing Furlan prosecco at just £35 per person.

Instead of the ubiquitous poached egg and avocado on rye bread, diners can plump for smoked salmon brioche, peppered with capers and onions, or the Uova Puttanesca, which is egg and grilled tuna. The pièce de résistance was undoubtedly the light, fluffy Ricotta pancake, heaped blueberries and maple syrup, which is best enjoyed with a coffee, to wash down all the bubbles.

Unlike many Bottomless brunch venues, the clientele wasn’t too rowdy, the sophisticated Canto Corvino managed to strike an apt tone between low-key finesse and relaxed weekend vibe.
