LONDON EATERIES – Nostrovia! Hackney pop-up reinvents ancient tradition of pairing vodka with food
A pop-up restaurant in Hackney Downs this June will revive the ancient Russian tradition of ‘bread wine’ pairing tailored vodka infusions with each dish of a meal.
Using locally sourced ingredients and modern techniques Our/London Vodka and Chateau Marmot will offer guests the option of pairing a flight of infused artisanal vodkas with an incredible five course tasting menu in a re-edit of this centuries old tradition.
Before the invention of modern day ‘vodka’ in the 19th century, diners in Russian taverns would choose from literally hundreds of different flavoured vodkas called ‘bread wines’ that paired exactly with their food. Garlic, caraway, dill and hundreds more foodie infusions were all up for grabs. It wasn’t unusual to have a different bread wine for each letter of the alphabet in your home bar.
On the 1st and 2nd June, at Our/London’s Hackney Downs distillery, pop-up guests will feast on a five course tasting menu that both pairs and prepares with the spirit in all kinds of different ways. Chateau Marmot is running a series of pop-ups throughout 2018 celebrating outstanding single estate producers and Our/London was an obvious choice of partner with its unique product and passion for food pairing.
Our/London Vodka is made from British wheat using a unique yeast originally found in wine production. This gives them a floral and citrus nose and a light, smooth mouthfeel. All hand bottled at their urban micro-distillery under the arches of Hackney Downs station.
The five-course tasting menu is being created by Karl Doering one of London’s most exciting new chefs. Karl previously worked at Claridge’s and the now sadly closed Mayfields in East London, where his food was described by the Guardian’s Jay Rayner as “a brilliant display of intelligent cooking”.
Our/London Vodka is famous for their infusions using foraged and best of season ingredients like rosemary, thyme and lavender. We’re working closely with them to match each course with the perfect bespoke vodka infusion. You’ll love how the vodka rounds out, cuts through and balances flavour at different turns throughout your meal.
As usual wines will be selected from our favourite independent growers and suppliers and craft beers carefully curated. Your ticket includes all five courses and a welcome cocktail to start proceedings as we mean to go on.
