LONDON EVENTS – Esteemed Moroccan singer Karen Rumy & Youth Present ZIK’R

Zik'r Poster UC (no show info) A3 for printEsteemed Moroccan singer, flamenco dancer, author and campaigner, Karen Ruimy, joins forces with sonic wizard Youth (Killing Joke, Pink Floyd, Primal Scream, The Orb, The Verve) for a very special presentation of their captivating ‘ZIK’R’ project to be held at London’s Union Chapel on Friday 21st November 2014.

ZIK’R’s narrative follows a story of exile, passion and survival, while the music tells a tale of separation pain and the agony of the soul. The central theme of the show follows the path of flamenco from India to Spain, and the exploration of the mystical roots of Sufi. ZIK’R seamlessly blends traditional instruments with exciting electronic elements and the whole performance is alight with spectacular, powerful flamenco dance.

Joining Karen Ruimy and Youth on-stage will be an ensemble of extraordinary multi-talented musicians who explore the cross-cultural roots of world music, offering a sound-clash of Qawwali, Egyptian and Moroccan traditional sounds, which collide with the wild untamed intensity of the flamenco spirit. ZIK’R has been created by celebrated musician and producer Youth, together with the acclaimed flamenco dancer and singer Karen Ruimy. Enhancing the whole experience will be the accompanying visual interpretations by acclaimed French artist Fabrice Hyber.

ZIK’R began life in India at the World Sufi Spirit Festival before moving onto Morocco where it was performed at the Marrakech Biennale, and was then followed by a mesmerizing sold out performance at Lillian Baylis Studio, Sadlers Wells, London earlier this summer. This latest presentation is even more spectacular, and each performance is unique.

Youth says, “Sufi music for me is soul music. What I love about it most is the ambition to achieve ecstatic transcendence through music and dance”.
