LONDON EATERIES – Feed your Roald Dahl obsession
Fancy yourself like the magical Matilda or are you naughty like Augustus Gloop? Escape to a world of pure imagination and join Drake & Morgan, The Cinnamon Club and Down Hall in celebrating Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday on the 13th September.
DRAKE & MORGAN
Available at all of D&M’s beautiful London bars and restaurants, let your inner child out by feasting on their indulgent dessert, the Whipple-Scrumptious Delight (£8.95, to share) packed with honeycomb and chocolate ice cream. You can also raise a toast to the literature legend with the James’ Giant Peach cocktail (£8.95), a juicy mix of Crème de Peche, Amaretto, KwaiFehLychee Liqueur and Gin Mare, deliciously presented with a frozen peach.
THE CINNAMON CLUB
Celebrate one of Britain’s best loved authors – Roald Dahl – at The Cinnamon Club, with a playful yet indulgent dahl menu running alongside the à la carte from 5 September until 2 October. Housed in the stunning Grade II-listed Old Westminster Library, Vivek Singh’s iconic modern Indian restaurant makes the perfect literary location to celebrate the author’s centenary this September.
Exclusively designed plates include The Sun’dahl (£5) – colourful Maharashtrian moong dahl salad with cucumber and curry leaf; Matilda’s smokey tandoori chicken simmered in garlic and cumin tempered yellow dahl (£6) and The Witches rich 24-hour slow cooked black dahl served with curried game mince. Charlie’s Chocolate Surprise (£7.50) – a delicious melange of caramel rice crisp, dahl payasam and chocolate fudge mousse, served with gold leaf and vanilla ice cream, is guaranteed to satisfy even Augustus Gloop’s sweet tooth!
Copies of Dahl’s best-loved books will also line the walls of the Old Library Bar, perfect for indulging in a little after dinner reading, with favourites such as Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the recently adapted The BFG. The refurbished bar offers the feeling of seclusion and ultimate relaxation with heavy, luxurious drapes and a multitude of bookshelves.
DOWN HALL
Celebrate Britain’s most-loved author with a special Roald Dahl Afternoon Tea at Down Hall, the stunning country house hotel on the Hertfordshire/Essex border, just 45 minutes away from London. Inspired by Dahl’s iconic childhood books and in honour of his 100th birthday on the 13th of September, this creative afternoon tea is a playful retreat from city life and will run throughout the month. Available daily from 2pm to 5pm and priced at £21.50 per person or £28.50 including a glass of Champagne, guests can while away the afternoon in chic country style.
Delight in a fun-filled chocolate Wonka Bar on arrival, then tuck straight into to a Peach Jam Tart inspired by James and the Giant Peach and a mini chocolate fudge cake from Matilda. Delectable finger sandwiches include fillings of Coronation Chicken (Fantastic Mr Fox would approve) and Snozzcumber that the BFG would love. No afternoon tea would be complete without warm scones with lashings of sweet jam and clotted cream.
Will you find the golden ticket? Every week one lucky winner will enjoy prizes including an overnight stay at the hotel for two with a three-course dinner and full use of the spa with treatments.
