HEALTH – Why I’m Happy I Used Private Healthcare Over the NHS for My Cancer Surgery

When I found a lump and was referred to NHS cancer care, I read online that I should be seen within two weeks. A month later, I was still waiting for my first appointment. That was incredibly worrying.

Luckily, earlier in the year I’d taken out AXA private health insurance and ticked the cancer care option. Once I got my referral letter, I was seen privately within three days.

My cancer consultant, Dr. Doddi, had such a calming nature and helped put me at ease as we went through all the scans. By the time I was told it was invasive cancer and had my operation, I still hadn’t received my NHS appointment. That was a terrifying thought.

I understand the NHS is under huge pressure, and having lived in the US, where people pay over £1,000 a month for insurance, we are fortunate. But when you’re facing a life-threatening illness and you can’t get seen, it’s hard not to worry.

I only took out private insurance for peace of mind. I never expected a cancer diagnosis. But the treatment I received was first-class. Nothing felt rushed, everyone went the extra mile, and I felt safe throughout.

My plastic surgeon, Mr. Johal, who rebuilt my breast after the mastectomy, was equally brilliant, and I’m still seeing him now.

Thankfully, I’m now cancer-free. I still have a long road ahead and will be monitored for five years, but for me, taking out private insurance was truly a godsend.

This is NOT an ad, I’m not being paid to say any of this, but if you can afford it (I paid around £150 a month), it’s money well spent on your health and if it can help someone else be seen quicker, it could save a life!

I used AXA, and if you use this link to sign up, you can get a reward of up to £139.
