BEAUTY – Heart London Magazine’s Winter Skin Care Essentials

We may be excited that it’s only 60 days until Christmas, but winter isn’t all fun – especially not for our skin. Thanks to the cold weather, most of us suffer from some degree of dryness and irritation.

That’s exactly why we decided to do some research into the best winter skin care essentials out there at the moment, and hopefully provide a helping hand when it comes to keeping your skin healthy over the next few months.

Organic Shop

Body Desserts Banana Milkshake Repairing Body Cream (£7.99)

The fantastic Organic Shop have a range of goodies perfect for looking after your skin at an affordable price. One of our favourites is their Banana Milkshake Body Cream, which comes in a very generously sized tub. As well as being light, creamy and quick to absorb, it also smells delicious – exactly like a banana milkshake. It contains banana extract to combat flaky/dry skin, avocado oil for nourishment and skin renovation, macadamia oil and vanilla which promotes skin elasticity, and can also help reduce stretch marks. If you’re a fan of sweet treats, this could be the body cream for you!

Organic Mango & Sugar Body Scrub (£2.99)

After trying a few rather expensive body scrubs on the market, this fruity treat works really well and also won’t cost you much. The thick texture is packed with sugar and great at exfoliating from first use – we noticed an immediate difference with our skin far smoother than beforehand. On top of that, like with all other Organic Shop products, it smells practicably edible and includes organic ingredients. With the recommended use of 2-3 times a week, your dry winter skin should be soft and glowing in no time.

Organic Apricot & Mango Gentle Face Peeling (£2.99)

The perfect pairing of apricot and mango come together for an effective skin peel mask, leaving your face soft and velvety to the touch. Simply leave this deep cleansing mask to your dry, clean face and leave for 8-10 minutes before rinsing. Not exactly difficult, and definitely worth your while! Over a couple of weeks, we found our skin was noticeably softer and brighter.

Natural Siberica

Exfoliating Face Scrub (£5)

One essential for your skin in the harsher cold weather is an exfoliating face scrub, and Natural Siberica offer a very good one. The company is known for using the unique healing properties of plants from Siberia, which have a high concentration of vitamins and minerals – all beneficial for your skin. The scrub with Sophora Japonica (stimulates regeneration) and Arctic Raspberry (soothing) has a lovely fruity scent and exfoliates well. The exfoliating apricot seeds aren’t too rough, and our skin was immediately softer after using it.

Snow Cladonia Day Cream (£11.50)

This moisturiser is ideal for ageing skin. Snow Cladonia contains Usnic Acid, a unique active ingredient which works wonders in restoring skin cells and helps slow the ageing process. We advise you to stick with this cream, as after a couple of weeks, our reviewer felt a real difference in her skin, with dryness subsiding and redness completely soothed. Other magical properties help reduce wrinkles, regenerate cells and stimulate collagen synthesis. On top of all that, SPF-15 also protects you from UV rays. The moisturiser comes in a 50ml bottle with a handy pump for easy use.

Naturtint

Anti-Ageing CC Cream (£7.99)

As winter hits, it’s not just our skin we need to think about, but our hair also. This leave-in intensive anti-ageing and restorative treatment from Naturtint comes highly recommended from us for general protection of your hair from UV, pollution and other damage. For anyone blow drying and styling, it also protects from heat. It’s ideal for coloured hair, helping colour last longer, and left our hair much softer and shiner. Helping to restore keratin, this CC cream also strengthens your hair, seals split ends and reduces breakage – so pretty much a magic potion for a range of our hair issues!

Dr. Levy

3Deep Cell Renewel Micro-Resurfacing Cleanser (£38.95)

Although this product is perfect for dry skin, it’s also great for ageing skin, providing a gentle cleansing and resurfacing experience. Skin is left clear, soft and glowing as it gets rid of dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria as well as simultaneously polishing your skin to smoothness and boosting moisture. A major plus point to this cleanser is that there are 3 application methods: Gentle Cleansing – apply to wet skin, massage in and then rinse off / Intensive Micro-Resurfacing – apply to dry skin, massage and then rinse / Skin Renewing Face Mask – apply to dry skin, massage and leave on for 5 mins before rinsing.

Depending on the needs of your skin, this cleanser will adapt to you.

Prevasore

Prevasore Lip Balm (£6.95)

It’s incredibly rare to make it through winter without chapped lips, and in some cases, more persistent and painful cracked lips. Prevasore’s lip balm is really wonderful at fighting this, with a combination of emollient and humectant ingredients, released only when in contact with and applied to your lips. We used this for a week and our dry lips were softer, well moisturised and any sore areas quickly healed up. The gel formula was particularly soothing, and it can also be used to treat cold sores. Although this costs a little more than your average lip balm, it offers a lot more and gives results.

Angela Langford

Thirsty Work Moisturiser (£37.50)

We were lucky enough to try a range of Angela’s incredible products, and want to pre-empt our reviews by saying just how impressive everything was. From packaging to the website layout and the sheer consideration that goes into her products, this is one skincare range we would seriously like to recommend.

The Thirsty Work Moisturiser comes in a nicely sized pump bottle and worked wonders for our skin. It’s ultra-hydrating and great for anti-ageing. A little goes a long way with this, and it’s packed with great ingredients to promote elasticity and protect your skin from damage. It improves tone, helps erase wrinkles and fine lines, heals and rejuvenates – and visibly delivers on these promises. It’s not too heavy upon application and soaked into our skin easily without feeling sticky or greasy. Look no further than Angela’s website for a long list of positive reviews!

Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm (£24.50)

This cleansing balm didn’t take long to completely eradicate our dry and flaky skin, leaving it soft and smooth. This can be used effectively to take off your make up, along with any other general dirt, and will leave your face glowing afterwards. It’s best used with a cleansing cloth, and you can literally feel the rich consistency nourishing damaged and dehydrated skin.

Scrub Up Facial Exfoliator (£27.50)

We’re always searching for good face scrubs, and this one is a fantastic contender! It can be used a couple of times a week to brighten up dull skin and scrub away any dead cells. Ingredients help boost skin renewal and jojoba beads give you a very gentle skin peel without damaging your skin. It also unclogs and tightens your pores, and is full of other goodness to calm skin and rid it of impurities.

Another little side note is Angela’s wonderful idea of feeding your skin “from the outside and from within” with natural ingredients, and the accompanying recipe cards were a lovely bonus. Our favourite was the coconut hot chocolate which we’ll definitely be enjoying well into the winter months.

7th Heaven

Charcoal Peel-Off Mask (£1)

We’ve all seen the huge range of 7th Heaven face masks, but with the cold weather approaching, it’s time to seriously draw attention to them! Although we recommend you check out all of their masks and their varied benefits, we tried out the charcoal peel-off and loved the results. Impurities were drawn out of our skin and the combination of witch hazel and birch leaf helped calm and sooth after use. It definitely provided a clean feel we haven’t felt before! If your skin is in need for a deep clean, use this weekly. It’s also super affordable and available from a number of shops.

Lovegrove Essentials

Moisture Cream (£40)

We have to say that out of all of our tested moisturisers, this may be our favourite of all. We tried this on very dry skin and found that even over the course of one night, it made an incredible difference. After absorbing into our skin, it already made it feel silky smooth and hydrated – and exactly the same upon waking up. It can be used at night for replenishing, and also with the Lovegrove Healing Touch Serum for extra nourishment. However, it is also an outstanding day cream, and provided a fantastic base under make up.

The moisturiser is packed with essential oils and vitamin E, has a lovely scent and also works to prevent oiliness as well as repairing dry skin.

We truly cannot recommend this enough.

Healing Touch Serum (£55)

Leading on from the moisture cream, this serum can be used in conjunction to really nourish your skin. However, on its own, it is also an extremely effective product. Full of essential fatty acids and anti-oxidents, the serum is light and easily absorbed, providing your skin with everything it could possibly need to remain healthy and protected. It leaved your skin soft and smooth from the first use. Another really great benefit is that it can be used on scar tissue to assist in skin regeneration. For ageing skin, it has been developed to help smooth out fine lines.

Cleansing Balm (£37)

This cleansing balm proved to be amazingly effective at removing dirt from our skin. As well as it’s lovely scent, it melted effortlessly onto our skin and left it feelings unbeatably clean. It promotes skin hydration and includes lemon oil, which is antibacterial and helps combat blemishes. There is a long list of beneficial ingredients which aid in protection and nourishment, and it also does a great job at balancing combination and oily skin. We found that it removed all traces of make up, and it comes with a muslin cloth to help exfoliation. The balm can also be used as a hydrating mask by leaving it on a little longer. We recommend giving that a try and allowing it to really soak into your skin and work its magic.

Daughter of the Soil

Baobab and Rooibos Body Wash (£18)

Daughter of the Soil is a fantastic brand using botanical oils sourced from across Africa, and we were fortunate enough to try out their body wash. Possessing a fresh, uplifting scent of white mulberries, this wash made our skin noticeably softer and less dehydrated. The Baobab oil improves skin elasticity and encourages regeneration, while the rooibos tea extract is an antioxidant. We’re huge fans of any body wash that not only leaves you feeling squeaky clean, but which also conditions and looks after your skin.

Daughter of the Soil have a range of other wondeful products including body lotion and body butters, and we suggest you check them out!

Sun Chlorella

Sun Chlorella Cream (£59.95)

Originally popular in Japan, Sun Chlorella is now becoming well known over here for its skin benefits – and has been put to good use in this nourishing skin cream. Chlorella is a natural green algae rich in both vitamins and nutrients, and can be taken as a supplement. However, for those who would rather try this powerful ‘Chlorella Growth Factor’, this cream is perfect. This componant encourages the rapid growth and repair of skin cells  and is thought to also be an effective anti-ageing treatment.

After applying, we found that our skin was better hydrated and generally looked healthier. Although slightly pricier than an average moisturiser, the exciting discovery of what Chlorella can do for our skin makes this definitely worth a try.

Hope’s Relief

Hope’s Relief Goats Milk Body Wash (£12.49)

Developed in Australia, Hope’s Relief have made a name for themselves by offering high quality skincare for those prone to eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. However, absolutely anyone can benefit from their therapeutic range, from babies to adults. Completely hypoallergenic, they have a wide range of products, and we first tried out their body wash. The large bottle has an easy dispense pump, and it’s not neccessary to use much in order to get a generous amount of lather.

Goat’s milk naturally balances the skins pH and is full of nutrients and beneficial vitamins, as well as being antibacterial – so ideal if you have blemishes and flare ups. This body was uses 100% fresh goats milk, and we certainly noticed a positive change in our skin after a few days of using it. Our skin was softer and it quickly remedied any dry, itchy patches. The silky texture is lovely to use, and the fact that everyone in the family can use it is a big plus point.

Hope’s Relief Intensive Dry Skin Rescue Cream (£17.49)

We suggest you have a look at Hope’s Relief online to read the impressive list of natural ingredients, all of which are incredibly helpful in treating sensitive and eczema prone skin. This intensive rescue cream did exactly as we hoped and expected. After applying it to itchy, dry and irritated skin, it cooled and soothed and absorbed quickly. There was no sticky or greasy residue, and our skin was definitely softer after use. Presented in a light and well-sized tube, it’s easy to have in your bag to whip out when your skin needs rescuing. We discovered that only a small amount was needed to make a big difference, so it should also last you a long time.

Hope’s Relief Moisturising Lotion (£15.50)

This successful lotion is suitable for both face and body, and perfectly completed our little test of the Hope’s Relief range. Again, suitable for a range of skin types and skin issues, it contains mango butter and grapeseed extract to lock in moisture, repair and rejuvenate your skin.

It really is quite rare to find a range that caters to so many ages and all skin so well and so effectively – we highly recommend all of the Hope’s Relief products. This is a really great daily moisturiser no matter what skin problems you’re battling, be it simple dry skin due to the weather or something more serious such as eczema.

Skin Shop

Defensil Rescue Serum (£9.95)

This hypoallergenic serum is ideal for calming skin which is itchy, irritated and very dry. It is suitable for face and body, and works as an intensive treatment when you’re suffering from persistent dry and even painful skin. We found it incredibly moisturising and helpful on red and itchy areas. Although it is available in a range of sizes, the smaller tube is perfect for carrying around with you. Not only does it provide immediate skin relief, but it also works to prevent your skin from drying further.

Liquorice Balm (£7.95)

If you love liquorice then we guarantee you’ll love this! And even if you’re not a fan, we suggest you give it a try regardless, as this balm helped turn our chapped lips around in impressive time. We applied this smooth lip balm each day for a week and soon enough our dry lips were no more. An interesting detail about this balm is that it contains an extract of active liquorice, not just flavouring, which makes all the difference.

Dry Eye Gel (£7.95)

It’s very common to experience dry skin around the eyes, but being such a delicate area, we’re often warned not to use our usual products to remedy this. Dry eye gel, on the other hand, has been designed specifically for this, with a gentler and lighter formula. Completely natural, this cool gel come in a delicate tube and apart from beating dry skin, it can also be used as a primer under your make up. Like all the other products we’ve had the pleasure of trying from Skin Shop, it’s highly effective and another winter essential.

KALME Undercoat (£9.95)

Kalme is an exceptional skin care range dedicated to helping red, sensitive and reactive skin with an extensive range of products. Their Undercoat moisturiser is particularly useful as it specifically covers an area not a lot of other products do. It’s chief aim is to de-sensitise skin before other products are applied, such as cosmetics. Also, general irritants such as pollution. Although it can easily be used as a stand-alone light moisturiser, we used it as a base under make up. It’s worth noting that you need to apply it about 15 minutes before your make up in order to let it absorb and take effect, we found it made a definitely difference. Make up glided on smoothly and areas of skin which normally became reddened quickly calmed down.

KALME Skin Care Kit (£52.95)

This brilliant collection of skin care essentials is a life saver for anyone with sensitive skin, redness and uneven tone. It’s also helpful for anyone suffering from rosacea, dry skin or acne prone skin. The kit contains a Cream Cleanser, Day Defence cream (SPF 25), Night Repair Cream, and Kalme’s Chameleon Concealer (SPF 20). This pretty much covers your entire skin care routine, and does an amazing job. The cleaner is light and gentle while still removing all dirt and calming skin and removing the need for water. The day and night creams are impressive moisturisers and also battle redness and sensitivity. Finally, the concealer helps repair your skin and uses tone-matching technology to correct and conceal red and uneven complexions.

The stand out element of Kalme is the quality of their products, all of which we found extremely beneficial for dry winter skin and sensitive skin alike. Although the complete kit probably works best all together, you can also buy each product individually from the Skin Shop website if you prefer to mix and match or are on a budget.

Purepotions

Skin Salvation Intensive Moisturising Ointment (£7.99)

Purepotions is another brand that offers fantastic treatments for dry and sensitive skin, including this ointment. The salve locks in moisture and also serves to provide a protective barrier for your skin. It’s rich texture means you don’t need to use a large amount, and it’s perfect for smaller problem areas. It is 100% natural and suitable for those suffering from any skin condition, such as psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema.

Skin Salvation Daily Moisturising Cream (£13.99)

This daily moisturiser is full of vitamins and essential fatty acids, created to keep your skin hydrated and supple. Familiar ingredients including shea butter, chamomile and calendula all combine to soothe as well as fight dryness. The pump dispenser bottle is of a very good size and we feel it’s well worth it’s price. It can be used for face and body and on any age – meaning that this could be your go-to moisturiser for the entire family. It’s also worth noting that purepotions have won a 2017 award for best eczema range, making this worth checking out if you suffer from the skin condition.

Skin Salvation Intensive Lip Balm (£4.99)

This handy little lip balm is very similar to the purepotions ointment, only its aimed at keeping your lips smooth and hydrated. However, the powerful treatment can also be used as a salve for dry skin around your eyes, nose and other areas – and it’s petite size means you’ll be able to grab it from your handbag or pocket if you’re out and about. A few other ideas for use include softening cuticles and smoothing eyebrows. It really is a little miracle stick and very effective!

Skin Salvation Intensive Hand Cream (£10.99)

Something common as cold weather hits is rough, sore skin on our hands. Lucky for us, purepotions has a remedy for that, too! Their natural hand cream is gentle on your skin and works hard to moisturise along with calming irritation and providing some protection. It’s free from irritants such as perfumes, parabens and silicones, so again, suitable for all skin types. We recommend you take this to work to keep your hands in top condition!

Skin Salvation Bath and Body Emollient Oil (£12.99)

We’re big fans of this emollient oil which helps rehydrate any moisture lost by bathing or showering. You can either add it to your bath or smooth it over your skin afterwards. Water can be drying on your skin, and this oil does a great job of locking in moisture. It’s natural ingredients can be a lot better for skin than the usual fragranced body washes, and it feels silky and nourishing. Apart from making a real difference to the suppleness of our skin, we loved that you can also use it as a facial cleanser or a shaving oil.

All available from: https://www.purepotions.co.uk/

Urtekram

Nordic Birch Body Lotion (£6.69)

This creamy body lotion has a lovely zesty scent, and is also impressively nourishing. The formula includes olive oil, shea butter, apricot kernel oil, evening primrose oil and jojoba oil – a plethora of magic ingredients for keeping your skin soft and healthy. That is also combined with birch leaf extract, which lends itself to the name. You get a pleasingly large bottle for a very reasonable price with a pump dispenser, to cut out fumbling around with lids when your hands are greasy and freshly moisturised!

Nordic Birch Hand Cream (£4.35)

A great accompaniment to the above body lotion is the Nordic Birch hand cream. Similar in fragrance and texture, this rich cream is a much needed rescue for dry hands, leaving skin silky smooth straight away.

Joan Collins Timeless Beauty Range

Ten Effects Skin Treat & Make-Up Fixer (£20)

An ideal product for women out there could very well be this gem from the Joan Collins Timeless Beauty Range, which not only hydrates skin, but also locks your make-up in place. All it takes is one spritz of this fixer to keep your face completely flawless. We found that it did a very good job of keeping make up from smudging or wearing off as the day went on, and it feels light and non-sticky. For anyone who lacks the time to fix their make-up throughout a hectic day, we recommend you get your hands on this!

Contra Time Scrupulous Cleanser (£9)

This luxurious feeling cleanser comes in a larger bottle and a smaller one which is ideal for travel. It works well to hydrate and give your skin a deep cleanse when removing make-up, and is suitable for sensitive skin. Another bonus point is that it is protective and also anti-ageing, meaning that they manage to pack a lot of little perks into this bottle. It only took a small amount to leave our skin feeling remarkably refreshed and free from all the inevitable dirt our skin picks up while we’re travelling working and leading busy lives.

I Am Woman – Dry Oil Body Polish (£18)

This is another stand out product from this range and particularly good for dry skin which is desperate for a boost. This body polish is rich in avocado, olive and jojoba oils, penetrating your skin to leave it soft and silky. Kiwi seeds and Himalayan salts work to exfoliate and scrub away dead skin cells, brightening the skin up considerably. We loved treating ourselves with this product which comes in a fancy 300g jar.

Magn!tone

Barefaced Shimmer Collection (£89.99)

A real luxurious treat for your skin during the harshest time of the year would definitely be the Magnitone Barefaced Daily Cleansing and Skin Toning Brush. Perhaps you could even gift yourself an early Christmas present – or at least put it on your wish list! Although it requires a larger budget, this Vibra-Sonic brush certainly justifies the price tag. It eliminates excess oil, dead skin cells, makeup and impurities, whilst toning and improving the absorption of skincare products. And if that isn’t impressive enough, it comes in two beautiful shimmering colours – Serenity Blue and Rose Gold.

We were honestly blown away by this, and loved using it. The soft brush head stimulates your skin with Vibra-Sonic technology to give your pores a gentle but deep cleanse. We don’t think our skin has ever felt quite as clean! It possesses a special toning mode to boost micro-circulation of the skin, and it’s important to stress that none of these functions are in anyway harsh on your skin or uncomfortable. The magic of this is how gentle yet effective the brush is. There is also a 20 second timer to help you keep track when you use the brush for the T-Zone, cheeks and neck. We loved that it came complete with a travel bag and a wireless USB charger so that you can take this wherever you may roam!

After using the brush for a couple of weeks, our skin was clear, soft and bright. So much so that we didn’t always feel the need to wear make-up. Please do check out Magnitone for all of their wonderful products and for further information on the Barefaced Shimmer Collection.

Ted Baker

Opulent Petal Shimmer Body Soufflé (£11)

Ted Baker has brought out some really nice frangrances and skin care products, and this body soufflé is one of the best. Although not too expensive, this definitely could fool you into thinking you’d paid a lot more, considering just how decadent it feels. In terms of winter skin, it’s very good for moisturising and keeping skin soft – but the real delight of this is the light buttery texture, the fragrance and how it leaves a subtle shimmer. The Opulent Petal scent is a blend of jasmine, vanilla and musk, and works just as well as any perfume. The dark purple tub is stylish and sophisticated, and it would also make a perfect gift.

Saaf

Eraser Body Oil (£24.99)

This organic body oil is ideal for all skin types, especially pregnant and post pregnancy skin. Some of its incredible benefits include the reduction and prevention of stretch marks, sun protection, soothing hyper pigmentation and helping reduce appearance of old scars. Apart from that, the nourishing oil is great for calming down irritated/itchy skin, promotes skin renewal and also keeps your skin soft and supple. When applying, the oil is smooth and silky, and we found it was absorbed very quickly. It’s likely to show signs of improving stretch marks and scars over time, but after using it for a couple of days we definitely saw a rapid improvement from our dry skin.

Shills

Shills Pore Purifying Peel-Off Black Mask (£9.99)

For a long time now, I have been looking for something that will clean my face. Something that goes deep into my pores and not just the surface and in addition to that, it leaves my skin feeling clean and silky smooth. I know I have found a winner with this product!

The main objective of the deep cleansing purifying mask is to remove the blackheads and dirt on your skin while the vitamin and plant extracts soften your skin to restore a youthful glow. I was excited to try this product as I have had a few acne problems. I have always struggled with acne and it was starting to affect my confidence, so much so that I didn’t even look people in the face when having a conversation with them. I didn’t look at anybody.  So I was excited to try this out!

When I applied this product to my face, it felt very thick and quite heavy.  I applied this all over my face avoiding the eye area, lips and the eyebrow area (I don’t have the intention of ripping my eyebrows off!). The mask has to sit on your face for about 20-30 minutes. When the face mask dried, it felt tight – a sure sign that the black mask was in fact attacking pores and getting all of the dirt contamination out.  Whilst taking off the mask once it was dried, I must admit it was quite painful but that pain just showed me that the mask was working. When I managed to peel the whole mask off, I flipped it over and saw a lot of dirt contamination that soap alone couldn’t clean. My skin felt smooth, clean and a few days later, my acne and my acne marks started to fade away. I can honestly say that this product has changed my life. It is something I am still using day to day and I can definitely see an improvement in my skin texture and appearance. My confidence has been restored and I feel like I can conquer anything.

So girls if you have acne problems and want something that will deeply cleanse your skin, like a facial in a spa? Use this product – acne won’t win this battle!
